Averaging Gradius For The Win

It’s hard to imagine a more awesome and thrilling waste of a collaborative effort than this.

I mean, in all honesty, it’s like video game nostalgia masturbation. It’s something we’ve all thought about doing – taking a look at different flight paths through a sequence game like Gradius, seeing how they compare, where they’re similar, where they’re different. This guy actually made it, and he color coded the layers to boot, which makes things quite nice, and makes following an individual player rather easier. He also farmed out the actual gameplay to ”fifteen” different people, so that the flight paths would be significantly different.

The results are surprisingly attractive. You get to watch different ships dwindle out of color as they’re individually killed off. The player ship and the enemies which diverge fragment in very attractive fashions. There’s even a moderately comprehensive article detailing the process the guy underwent in order to make the film. Interesting as the article might be, though, the video’s the important part.

Witness Averaging Gradius in awe.
